Initially upon searching for information on Cathedrals, I could come up with nothing but a doom metal band from England. After some further digging, I unearthed some facts about the mysterious Cathedrals – one being that it evolved from California native Josiah Byars’ original project, A Movable West. Secondly, despite a frustrating and possibly purposeful lack of information, the group’s debut single managed to surpass 100,000 plays on Soundcloud in less than a week. One could say that the future bodes well for Cathedrals.
Listening to “Unbound,” one can easily see how this could be. With a driving undercurrent of guitar riffs and a tight electronic beat, the song cascades into your brain like a swift running river. The ear pleasing vocal duet floats above soft, twangy guitar, and the female voice notably adds a sweet layer of harmony to the oxymoronic declaration, “I’ll nurse you back to pieces.” Combining in perfect symbiosis, these elements all contribute to the feeling of being washed away by sound, a weightless object in a racing stream.
