With help from Count This Penny’s Amanda Rigell, long time collaborators Connie Ward and Erin Fuller carry a small dose of dissonance but put forth a big share of soft wondrous harmonies in Building on Buildings’ newly released single, “Wheel.” The Madison quartet’s self-proclaimed “gentle indie rock” sound is calm and reflective — something that should take listeners to an intimate place to discover untouched thoughts. There’s a mysterious beauty to the way the harmonies of Fuller and Rigell meet the ambience of the drifting guitars and light tap of the snare drum. “Wheel” embodies an aimless waltz, a soft pretty thing that floats gently in the wind without boundaries.

The band conjures memories of Field Report with its pedal steel twang and layers of noodling guitar lines. And again similar to that band, Building on Buildings invokes the feeling of a long country road trip whose destination is uncertain. But Ward and Fuller’s sweet vocals is a hint that the final stop of that journey could have something beautiful in store.
