Coming from his Ocean Death EP released in May, Will Wiesenfeld (performing under the Baths pseudonym) gives us “Fade White,” a track that presents a mood equal parts chill and upbeat, influenced respectively by vocals and percussion. While the track starts off slower, the 1:12 mark brings the addition of a consistent hi-hat. It instantly becomes an essential element of the track, but unfortunately drowns out some of the more detailed textural layers of the song.

While the lyrics to “Fade White” are fairly straightforward in their finality, they leave me with an interesting contrast to one of my favorite heavy metal ballads, Metallica’s “Fade to Black.” While both songs end with presumed death, I can’t help but ponder if fading towards one neutral color is better than the other. Sure, white has more a positive connotation to its color, but “Fade to Black” is far and away the more epic song. Then again, maybe such introspection is useless and we should simply enjoy “Fade White” for what it is.
