You can look all you want, but you won’t find much information about British-born Dutch artist BEA. In fact, once you know that she lives in Amsterdam and that this track is her second single (“Breadwinner” was the title of her first), you will have exhausted the Internet’s collective store of related knowledge. Naturally, that means we’ll have to look to “Safe Ground” to provide a few more clues for the enquiring listener.

Opening with temperate waves of synth and a captivatingly laid-back beat, “Safe Ground” promises a ’90s electropop vibe even before BEA’s vocals drop. The addition of her fresh and disarming voice piles on even more after-hours, Buddha Lounge flavor. And, though this track can’t provide us with any more concrete facts about its creator, it does indeed live up to its title. In short, there’s something so familiar about this single’s swirling beats and glowing vocals that you can’t help but feel safe and sound every time you press “play.”

About The Author

Gretchen grew up on Tom Petty and T. Rex and played them both copiously during her record-spinning days as a college radio DJ (and yes, those records really spun — it was “The Vinyl Show,” after all). Nowadays she cultivates a strong pop sensibility and delights at the resurgence of disco and that deep, ‘90s-flavored house aesthetic.
