Although the man behind Slow Magic is elusive, and chooses to reveal neither his face nor his identity (he wears a tribal mask in concert), a few things are clear. He’s an excellent DJ who has remixed everything from Delorean to Bon Iver. He has formal music training and is a percussionist as well as a producer. He loves Iceland. And, if this song is any indication, he also loves girls. Like, really, really loves them.

How do I know? Well, it doesn’t take lyrics for “Girls” to contain a comfort and flow that indicates an appreciation for the song’s subject matter. Not only that, but the chiming beats and looped vocals of this cut seem to bring the rainforest to the dance floor and shroud everything in a mist that’s one part tribal-lite and one part relaxed exultation. And if “Girls” seems understated compared to the balls-out club beats of the Top 40 crowd, just give it another listen. Like all good tracks, it gets deeper and danker every time you hit “play.”

About The Author

Gretchen grew up on Tom Petty and T. Rex and played them both copiously during her record-spinning days as a college radio DJ (and yes, those records really spun — it was “The Vinyl Show,” after all). Nowadays she cultivates a strong pop sensibility and delights at the resurgence of disco and that deep, ‘90s-flavored house aesthetic.
