Well guys, it’s here. Summer has finally arrived. Of course this will mean different things for all of us—some are lucky students lounging in the sun enjoying their break, while others will be slugging to the office or whatever else the real world has in store. That being said, there are certain aspects of summer that everyone can get behind: fun, sun, and really really good music.

We’ve taken care of the latter with our annual Summer Jams mixtape, a conglomeration of all of the most blast-worthy, bumptastic tracks of summer. You’ll find some stuff you know, more stuff you don’t, but most importantly you’ll find the soundtrack to your summer.

Keep an eye out for Part 2 later in the season. (UPDATE: Here is Part 2.)

Cuckoo Lander  “Dumb Dee Diddy Dumb”

There’s nothing sexier than a female vocalist with a sultry, low-pitched voice. This trend seems to get plenty of summer attention, courtesy of the flower-crown and denim cutoff crowd—and for good reason! What sets “Dum Dee Diddy Dum” apart is the fact that its unapologetic vanity refuses to come across as reasonless self-interest. Get out of her Lana Del-Way; she’s bound to make a splash with this track. —Nikki Stout

KURSES
This is Eloquently Heavy, AMAZING!
yourlongshadows Excellent in every way

Alvvays  “Archie, Marry Me”

The muted vocals and swooping guitars of “Archie, Marry Me” sounds like a faded polaroid. It’s summer sweetness embodied, and tinged with pleasant nostalgia. But don’t get too caught up looking back: this jam heralds a full LP of tracks from the Toronto-based group, out July 22. —Riley Beggin

What they’re saying on Soundcloud:
Caitlin Cloete
I want this song to be played at my wedding one day. Now just need to find my Archie <3
Peter Ritman hi my name is archie : )

It Looks Sad.  “Radical”

Yes, going to the beach is fun. But there’s going to come a time (be it late July or early August) when you’ve had enough of the sand, enough of the surf, and enough of the seagulls. And that’s OK! Because “Radical”—this summer’s sad sack anthem—will have been burned out from the beach too. —Andrew Brandt

What they’re saying on Soundcloud:
Seth Charles Kaylor
Speaks to my heart so hard
Hymn for Atlas This is amazing! What a fantastic vocalist.

Bora York  “Let Loose”

The release of Bora York’s dream pop jam “Let Loose” is nothing if not well timed. With a bouncing beat and a refrain of “you can never say never,” this is a track that is sure to be a cornerstone of any sleepless summer night. —Rebecca Edwards

What they’re saying on Soundcloud:
Veasna Pho
song of the summer for me : )
thetaylorlewin This is gonna be stuck in my head forever! Love it!

Montreal Sex Machine  “Blackout”

Singular in its objective, “Blackout” is a song set to be both your summer party starter and closing time call. It’s dance-punk for a post-dance-punk universe—and, fortunately for us, it’s the song you’ve spent 10 years hoping that Franz Ferdinand would release. —Andrew Brandt

What they’re saying on Soundcloud:
Gaetanx
Shut up and take my money!
PetarMolnar That bassline, huuh, fuckyeah!

Shura  “Touch”

Dusky and smooth, “Touch” is the perfect antidote to the summer romance trope; instead of telling a love story, Shura uses her silvery vocals to describe the sexually-charged aftermath of a breakup. Even while she’s exercising restraint, however, a careless listener might find themselves falling in love with this track’s melt-in-your-mouth synths and slinky beats. Luckily, songs don’t break hearts. Especially not songs as pretty as this one. —Gretchen Tracy

What they’re saying on Soundcloud:
HsvSenator If sex was music then this would b one of those mind blowing orgasims!

hearing this for the first time ever. sick on the couch in manhattan. wifey is making dinner. this song is just perfect. thank you for this

D.D Dumbo  “I Woke Up Covered in Sand”

Summer is the perfect time for a bedroom jam. Of course by “bedroom jam,” I don’t mean a soundtrack for sexytimes but rather the sort of weird and cryptic track that seems like it must have been made at home. And wherever D.D Dumbo recorded “I Woke Up Covered in Sand,” he certainly captures that DIY vibe with ‘60s-style layering, twinges of psychedelia, and an ambling structure that will sound just as good in your bedroom as it does in his. —Gretchen Tracy

What they’re saying on Soundcloud:
Serejah Ki
excellent!
jesssbourke I second that!

GGOOLLDD  “Gold”

When I close my eyes and imagine summer, it’s the little things that come to mind: the downy puff of dandelion seeds scattering on the breeze or the glitter of airborne dust motes in the afternoon sun. And if there’s any song that captures that same sun-baked nostalgia, it’s GGOOLLDD’s aptly-titled “Gold,” where strobing synths and far-away vocals spin and shimmer like the most distinctive parts of the season. —Gretchen Tracy

What they’re saying on YouTube:
Raeven Chapp
aye… this is the jam… go mke.

Ex Hex  “Hot and Cold”

Combatting the summer heat with air conditioning is a battle often fought but rarely won. You’re either sweating or you’re freezing; there is no happy medium. Luckily for us, Ex Hex specializes in both heating and cooling.  If you’re cold, they’ll bring the warmth. And if you’re too hot? Well, let’s just say they’ve got you covered there too. —Andrew Brandt

ITS WEEKEND MOTHERFUCKAAAAS
Nathan E. Milos I love the guitar. This is a great continuation of the alternative classic rock approach of what (Mary) Timony did on the Wild Flag LP. I’m excited!

Panama Wedding  “Uma”

Panama Wedding came into our lives last summer with “All of the People” and they’re doing it again with “Uma” off their debut album, Parallel Play. “Uma” is the wave that comes in just as you roll out of bed and the beat of your city starts to become alive. The simple chorus evokes the lust of the sunny season, leaving you to wonder where “the one” is from summers passed and will inevitably have you chanting Uuuma all summer long. —Erica Matlin

Allie X  “Catch”

Allie X may only have three songs to her name, but she’s already made a fan out of Katy Perry. And with its infectious melody and memorable chorus, “Catch” proves that the fandom is no fluke. Forget calling this one the summer of 2014; it’ll simply be remembered as “Allie X.” —Andrew Brandt

Too similar to vevo trash, but quite nice.

Marlene ∞  “Indian Summer”

Sometimes all you need is a light and catchy pop tune to turn up with your windows down. With an anthemic reprise, Marlene ∞ delivers. The piano is bouncy, the melody is bright, and her voice is on point. At a barbecue, by the pool, or on the way to a late-night bonfire, “Indian Summer” will have you humming along whether you realize it or not—and what else can you expect from a summer jam? —Nikki Stout
