If you’re aware of Jacqueline Cummings, better known as Mapei, it’s probably through her single “Don’t Wait,” which weaves together a complete, almost international palette of sounds. An oriental twang resembling the Chinese Pipa, African drums, James Blake-esque voice morphs and—of course—Cummings’ incredible voice backtracked by static, all create a game-changing, genre-defying, downright gorgeous track.

“Change” is just as impressive. The same staticy residue accompanies Mapei’s signature Swedish club beats and her smooth vocals. “Change” may not be as consciously experimental as “Don’t Wait,” but it compensates with a booming energy. The lyrics are simple, waxing lyrical on the real love “inside of you,” but not much depth is required when the song’s pounding percussion and catchy rhythm are already getting under your skin.

The Stockholm artist, who is set to release her debut album, Hey Hey, in September, creates an incredible beat while still upholding some indie flair. Mapei is set to tour with Lykke Li through October, putting her wild and unique spirit on display.
