It’s only fitting that a song entitled “Morning” should dawn like the breaking day. And indeed, there’s something rosy and expansive about this track’s echoing guitar, honeyed vocals, and late-arriving beat. Even the song’s tone—a blend of restless yearning and deep emotion—comes across as the perfect soundtrack to accompany the glow of an early sun on the horizon.

The image of the sunrise is an apt metaphor for Brit David Rhodes’ blossoming career as well as his music. With nothing but an EP under his belt (“Morning” is the title track), he’s already opened for the suddenly-everywhere Sam Smith and is now gearing up for a European tour. And while the intensity that he pours into his music might drive him towards early burnout, it sure looks like his star will be bright while it shines.

About The Author

Gretchen grew up on Tom Petty and T. Rex and played them both copiously during her record-spinning days as a college radio DJ (and yes, those records really spun — it was “The Vinyl Show,” after all). Nowadays she cultivates a strong pop sensibility and delights at the resurgence of disco and that deep, ‘90s-flavored house aesthetic.
