Lemonade’s “Stepping” is a fun listen: Maybe not the kind of fun you would expect, but it definitely creates a complex and interesting atmosphere. This is probably best explained by the lyrics: “It lifts me up and then it pulls me under.” Its intro is simply a series of exciting electronic ripples, which sound a lot like the club/dance version of dragging your hand across a piano keyboard. The song is an early release from their soon-to-be released album Minus Tide, which comes out on September 9.

It’s a relief that Lemonade seeks to add more to the dance genre than heavy bass beats, often experimenting with otherworldly noises and clashing beats, specifically on their most recent album, 2012’s Diver. They bring the same sort of vibes to “Stepping,” albeit with a little less boldness. Asserting the sentiment of drunk beach-party blues, the track serves as an interesting indicator of what’s to come on Minus Tide.
