I first got into Mikky Ekko sometime last year when I came across his optimistic single, “Pull Me Down.” His newest single, “Smile,” is an anthem-like number that is equally as worthy of playing on repeat. In short, as the title suggests it just makes you smile.

The track sings a “live in the moment” type message, reminding us to “smile the worst is yet to come / we’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun.” Despite rather pessimistic seeming lyrics, the track comes off as more inspirational than anything else. I’ve been listening to “Smile” a good deal on my daily commute, and if nothing else an overwhelming feeling of peace with the present always momentarily comes over me.

Ekko has accumulated a certain amount of staying power thanks to his contributions to Rihanna’s ballad “Stay” and the recent hit, “Kids.” Between the catchiness of this song and the kind of substance everyone needs a little bit of in their daily life, I’m sure it won’t belong before we hear more from this beloved soul pop artist.
