The Weeknd. Rhye. Wonder Wonder. What do these artists have in common? Well, for one thing, they all began by posting songs online anonymously. And although Wonder Wonder is the only one of the three whose identity has yet to be disclosed (all they’ve said is that they’re a songwriting duo from London), there’s one thing that’s for certain. Namely, if they keep writing songs of this caliber, which they’ve pledged to do every month for a year, it’s only a matter of time before Wonder Wonder’s success will force the big reveal.

So what’s so compelling about this track? Despite the fact that “Body Gold” opens with its three biggest components—keyboards, hushed and layered male and female vocals, and rattling, R&B-tinted beats—the song’s most appealing factor is that its sexiness blossoms slowly and with each passing note. At first, “Body Gold” is a pretty, almost folksy, tune. Two minutes in, it’s a nuanced portrait of intimacy that demonstrates an excellent grasp of modern production values even through its simplicity. Most importantly, with such a fascinating evolution over three short minutes, “Body Gold” is also the kind of track that makes you curious what the group will do next.

Gretchen grew up on Tom Petty and T. Rex and played them both copiously during her record-spinning days as a college radio DJ (and yes, those records really spun — it was “The Vinyl Show,” after all). Nowadays she cultivates a strong pop sensibility and delights at the resurgence of disco and that deep, ‘90s-flavored house aesthetic.
