VYD’s “Tank Tops” is indie rock with a pulse. Self-described as “NuDisco/Rock,” the group takes dance music to a new level. Comprised of singer-songwriter Justin Howard and guitarist-electronic mixer Nick Wisse, the duet are originally from Southern California. Now in Brooklyn, certainly a long way from home, the band still carries a sun-soaked and warm summer noise.

For me, the lyrics and rhythm of “Tank Tops” visualize an ideal trip up California’s Pacific Coast Highway: sunsets rounded out by warm ocean breezes and blaring music through winding tunnels. Aside from the imagery, it has that fun and freaky coastal feel—light electronic melodies mixed with heavy guitar strums, loud claps paired with pounding beats. Howard’s voice takes us through a face-paced visual roller coaster, while the music itself flows easy and rhythmic.

VYD charms with its interlacing electronic melodies and an undeniably catchy beat. The rock element is an interesting plus, soaking what would usually just be a good dance number with some tangible instruments, making their noise a fun banter between two generations of music. It most certainly makes for some interesting (and highly danceable) listening.
