“Take more from me. Ask more of me. Give me more back. Stop fighting against the things you want the most.”

According to the statement George Lewis Jr. (aka Twin Shadow) issued with “Turn Me Up,” that’s the message behind the single. It’s also a damn good way to announce an upcoming album, which is exactly what Lewis did when he released this steely, hypnotic track.

So what can we expect from Twin Shadow’s third LP, entitled Eclipse and set to drop on March 17? If this song is any indication, the album will be full of the smooth synthpop, deep beats, and moody flourishes we’ve become accustomed to from this Dominican Republic-born vocalist. Until then, “Turn Me Up” provides plenty of material to examine, pairing sultry synths with percussive shivers for a layered sound that resonates differently with each listen.

Gretchen grew up on Tom Petty and T. Rex and played them both copiously during her record-spinning days as a college radio DJ (and yes, those records really spun — it was “The Vinyl Show,” after all). Nowadays she cultivates a strong pop sensibility and delights at the resurgence of disco and that deep, ‘90s-flavored house aesthetic.
