You don’t have to have watched last week’s BET awards to be familiar with Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen.” It’s playing on every muzak system and car stereo in America. However normal it feels to see Top-40 rappers come and go, Fetty’s path to the BET stage was more like a high-speed railway — it’s been just over a year since he dropped that first single (written and produced in his hometown of Paterson, N.J.) and emerged from nearly absolute obscurity.

The difference between Fetty Wap and the normal players in the wax and wane of hip hop stardom is his knack for hooks so rock solid it would unseat even the Captain himself. “Show You” is a testament to this, and hopefully a sign that Fetty might have a little longer half-life than the rest. Eschewing over-the-top metaphor or grandstanding, “Show You” is pure emotion; a good old fashioned love song made modern. The hook is rightfully two-thirds of the song, a chorus so euphoric it’s made for sun-drenched days and adventure-fueled nights. A summer jam in its finest form.
