I can’t think of a single person who hasn’t needed this song at some point in their lives. Of course, there’s always something relatable within the breakup song genre in general, but All Dogs’ new single “That Kind of Girl” is a musical dear john letter with a rejuvenating dose of emotional maturity. With a fun punk-pop sound somewhat reminiscent of the late ’90s, I’m pretty sure this track could have helped prevent a couple of those crazy breakup stories we all carry around in our back pockets.

“If you’re wanting something else, then I hope you find it/
I don’t want to be the weight upon your shoulders when you wake”

Reading those lyrics alone, it may seem like the refrain of a Bonnie Raitt-esque heartbreak song. And while the croons of “I Can’t Make You Love Me” are sometimes exactly what they doctor has ordered, it doesn’t exactly leave you feeling uplifted. All Dogs perfectly captures the emotionally freeing side of throwing in the towel with someone you care about — it’s honest and a little brutal, but listeners don’t drown in the song’s self-pity. Refusing to be a victim of love gone wrong, lead singer Maryn Jones sets her partner, and in doing so herself, free from feeling like a nag rather than feeling loved. In short, she refuses to be “that kind of girl.”

All Dogs’ debut EP, Kicking Every Day, will be released August 28.
