When Elohim was first pitched to me, the term used to describe the L.A.-based elctro-popper was “CHVRCHES-y.” Being a proud member of the FANCLVB, I was immediately intrigued. Listening to “Bridge and the Wall,” however, I found that that comparison only went so far. Sure, Elohim’s vocals do recall Lauren Mayberry, but they’re not what makes this track stand out.

Essentially, “Bridge and the Wall” sounds like Lauren Mayberry fronting SBTRKT. The intro (which, if my high school band knowledge serves me correctly, is played on a marimba) features a jungle-rave vibe similar to the criminally underrated English producer. But for all the spacey ambiance she uses, by the time the hook comes around, it soars — it could be the most introspective dance track of the year.

“Bridge and the Wall” is a club banger for people who hate clubs, proof that no matter how brooding and artistic an artist may seem on the outside, there’s sunshine in there somewhere.
