Kelly Zutrau, the lead singer of Wet, has that kind of crystal clean voice that is so pristine there is little doubt she could traverse any music genre. Lucky for us, she has found a home in modern pop — and “It’s All in Vain” is a perfect example. Clear, direct, and unbelievably catchy, the group’s most recent single is a perfectly packaged gift.

Wet has been gaining some traction lately, and for good reason. The group is proving themselves to be masters at setting the trials of romantic relationships to music. “It’s All in Vain” is a song where the lyrics and melody are perfectly in sync with one another — probably because Zutrau’s vocals carry both of them. It has the same narrative arc as a well written personal essay; just as the reader begins to get overwhelmed in the weight of the prose (or in this case, soft and careful synth chords) we are reminded of the thesis of the essay — in this case, the refrain: “When you say you love me, baby, let me see your face.” The delivery is both beautiful and intelligent.
