The four members of Brooklyn-based LVL UP met in college at SUNY Purchase before moving to the city to begin recording under their own label, Double Double Whammy. They deviated from their DIY past last Friday by releasing Return to Love, their third LP and first on Sub Pop Records.

They’re not moving far from home, though. Their ’90s-inspired lo-fi grunge rock is still on display, especially in their single “Pain.” The track pairs an upbeat guitar and drums with crying lyrics that bemoan internal angst and spit it back those who have caused loved ones’ pain. The song barrels forward with guttural threats and mesmerizing contrast.
