About Us

Founded in Madison in 2005, Jonk Music is a daily source for new music. As a University of Wisconsin student (now alumnus) and lover of all things indie music, Jon Kjarsgaard set out to create a site that covered both local and national bands from a grounded perspective. Diligent postings including “a new song daily,” summer mixtapes, and nuanced year-end lists led to increased readership and, in 2012, Jonk Music introduced a Madison page to its lineup. The Madison section originated from an interest not only in covering local and national releases but in expanding to feature local concerts as well. Since then, Jonk Music has interviewed numerous visiting acts including Animal Collective, Delta Spirit, Dirty Projectors, Local Natives, and Andrew W.K. Through dedicated team members and creative leadership, the site has grown steadily but the core idea remains: Madison is an awesome place for independent music and its scene deserves meticulous, tasteful coverage.
