Plants and Animals

"Lightshow" MP3
from the album The End of That
2012
iTunes

BY ERICA MATLIN | Jonk Music

Plants and Animals' upcoming February 28 album, The End of That, is actually the beginning of, what appears to be, an incredible year for music. Their new single, "Lightshow," is captivating in the sense that it combines both classical rock elements and more modern indie-alternative. As a new listener to this Montreal-based band, I felt like I've been missing out on something great the moment Warren Spicer and Nicolas Basque began to strum their instruments. These guys are the driving force behind the acoustic-heavy single, but tying it all together is percussionist Matthew Woodley. The quick smash of cymbals gets the song going and provides tempo changes that aid in this collaboration of classic and modern rock that defines Plants and Animals.

Beyond the instrumentals, the vocals are pure human talent. Though all three members contribute, it is Warren Spicer's distinctive chords that take the reigns in "Lightshow". His drawn out, almost shakiness gives the song emotion and greater attention to the catchy, but brief, lyrics. It is the type of engrossed in the song that it is a surprise when it ends, so save yourself some time and keep it on replay.
