Major Lazer has emblazoned a path of its own in the EDM world that virtually no producers have crossed before. The brain child of producers Diplo and Switch, Major Lazer fuses Reggae influences with electronic music in a way that has never been heard before they hit the scene — not to mention their live shows are something that you need to see to believe. Complete with enough lasers to fill up a James Bond movie, as well as some NSFW “daggering,” it is a high energy experience that is impossible to forget. To this day, I still proudly display the green-colored foam laser gun that reads “Guns don’t kill people…lazers do” from the first Major Lazer show that I attended from their first tour. Since then, Major Lazer has carved their name in the music industry, even prompting Beyoncé to use their song “Pon de Floor” for her hit song “Run the World.”

Now minus Switch, Major Lazer is a one-man show with Diplo taking the reins and continuing to bring a taste of the Caribbean to suburban dance parties everywhere. Diplo continues the legacy with the new single “Get Free” from the anticipated LP Major Lazer Frees the Universe. Featuring the gorgeous vocal range from Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman, “Get Free” sends positive vibes shooting from the speakers straight into your heart. As the song begins the tropical beat pulses and Coffman lets out an animalistic wail and the infectious synths kick in and take you on a musical vacation from all of the troubles that may be plaguing your life. Coffman’s voice croons on, singing about how she “Never got love from a government man.” This track definitely is a change from the normal high energy Major Lazer songs, but its effectiveness is undeniable.

The song comes to an end with the whimsical sounds of a Native American flute wafting in and out of your ears, creating a sense of euphoria that only a Major Lazer production can create.
