“Tonight Again” is a lot of noisy goodness. From the sound of it, the members of Decades grew up listening to a lot of Joy Division. A lot. And from the songs they have released so far from their debut album, whatever inspired these Toronto natives paid off. They have managed to take what could be your typical angry dark rock music and gave it a more palatable edge.

“And I leave your faith tonight
I put everyone aside
But I’d leave you still in a heartbeat
Do you notice that, when I take you back
?”

At the risk of sounding kind of heartless, this song is mean in a completely delectable way. It’s the musical personification of the feeling you have when you need to pull your hair out and throw things. The sound of “Tonight Again,” which begins as something bordering on soft and beautiful, builds in such a temper tantrum-esque way that by the end of the song there is hardly a melody at all. A poetic whirlwind ensues, where the vocals become screaming and the lead guitar overtaken by hectic percussion. The effect is well done to say the least — where some rock music seems to lose all control in a way that seems almost gratuitous, the structure of “Tonight Again” is clearly artfully structured.

The self-titled album Decades is set for release April 30.
