It took Chris Porterfield nearly a decade to write the 10 songs that comprise Field Report’s self-titled 2012 debut. Somehow, a follow-up is only months away.

“Wings,” the first single from the upcoming Marigolden, is cathartic in classic Field Report fashion. Built on ambient synths and a deep-rooted midwestern discontent, the track builds perpetually for four minutes until it eclipses with a signature “get these rocks out of my mouth” Porterfield refrain.

Like the material that makes up Field Report, “Wings” juts out just before the burst; unlike Field Report, however, “Wings” feels like a fully fleshed out endeavor. Two years of touring appears to have done the boys some good, and if “Wings” is any indication of what the rest of LP number two has in store for us this October, Porterfield and Co. should rest easy. Now, about those dang rocks…
