Count This Penny is an Americana four-piece who hails from Tennessee but has called Madison home for the last few years. Since they’ve arrived, they’ve shifted from a reliable folk and country outfit to one of our city’s most talented and cherished acts.

The band’s latest single, “Get Your Gun,” follows in their tradition of writing songs that sound completely removed from the information age but are only the better for it. The track is a show-stopper, a real heart sinker; it moves like a slow, defeated procession set to march behind steel-guitared guides and Amanda Rigell’s bruised vocals.

Of course, there’s a catharsis to “Get Your Gun”—an understanding that before you were a regular at your local dive’s last call, you were in love. And that while you’re not ready for it yet, there will probably (maybe) be new love. In the interim, it may be best to skip the gun and settle for a tissue instead.

Count This Penny’s Wolves Are Sheep EP arrives on November 4.
