Hot off of their 2014 win of the UK’s prestigious Mercury Music Prize, Scottish trio Young Fathers has hit the deck with a new album, entitled White Men Are Black Men Too. The three men met at a hip-hop club in Edinburgh as impressionable 14-year-olds, and ever since they have been keeping listeners on their toes by mixing rap, grime, and Afrobeat to create a refreshingly new take on the genres.
Starting out with an eclectic mixture of tambourine and electronic clicks, Young Fathers’ “Shame” quickly rattles itself into life. With surprises around every corner, the song is a dense roller coaster of quirky noises and ever-so-slightly out of tune accompaniment. The wackiness persists through nonsensical lyrics, leading the song around curve after unpredictable curve. Whether or not the track has you scratching your head, it won’t be long until you are forced to get up and dance to the infectious beat.
