Kiiara is one big mystery. The 20-year-old pop singer and songwriter from Illinois maintains little social media presence, using only Twitter and Soundcloud pages. Consequently, avid users from all over the world have noticed her music and want more. With only three songs released, perhaps her biggest mystery is her musical direction. We can only wait to see what her debut EP, Meet Me in the Cornfield, will bring.

But “Gold,” her debut single, provides a perfect introduction. Sonically, powerful beats with infectious melodies mesh to form a pop tune with a dark side, something very different from typical pop music: “Don’t care what you say to me, Imma bite your feelings out.” This track tells the story of a woman establishing her independence and freedom from a man who treated her poorly.

Kiiara’s rise in popularity reveals the power of social media to spread music. One track has kick-started an underground following that promotes an intimate fan base, something that can be lost with the depth of the internet.
