Way back in 2008, Fleet Foxes sneaked into our lives, unexpectedly dropping the list-topping, self-titled debut LP on all of our asses and shaking up the indie music world in the process. No one realized the band’s level of crossover potential until it was upon us, and looking from these 2011 eyes, it could be said it blazed a trail for a few of our favorite bands of the past couple of years. We listened to Mumford & Sons, Local Natives, and Grizzly Bear’s breakthrough albums with ears that had been primed by Fleet Foxes’ success. And this recognition no doubt aided the Seattle six-piece’s easy transition into heavy rotation.
Upon its return, Fleet Foxes show no sign of changing direction and have once again, recorded with Phil Ek, who produced the first album and both EPs. The title track of their new LP, Helplessness Blues, out May 3, features trademark acoustic guitars, swirling choruses, and Simon & Garfunkle-ish vocal harmonies. But this may not be the case for the entire album, given lead Fox, Robin Pecknold, cited Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks as a lead influence of the new record.
