No one can accuse nomadic singer-songwriter Cass McCombs of writer’s block. Six months after releasing his fifth album Wit’s End, McCombs is set to release Humor Risk, his second album of the year, next month. Judging by lead single “The Same Thing,” McCombs is relatively more upbeat than on the bleak, but brilliant, Wit’s. Both albums were borne of the same producer (Ariel Rechtshaid) and recording sessions, yet where Wit’s reveled in its sparseness, “The Same Thing” chugs along like an acoustic Krautrock track. McCombs isn’t filling dance floors anytime soon, but the folky guitars and sunny organs would make Brian Wilson proud.
