A band whose style has always reached across different genres, Megafaun’s latest release rewards curiosity as it ranges from folk-rock, jazz, and experimental. The self-titled album comes after the “Sounds of the South” show last year with Fight the Big Bull, Justin Vernon, and Sharon Van Etten where they recorded a live album based on ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax’s collection of American folk music in the early 20th century. Megafaun admits the experience was powerful and inspired them to produce their newest record.

Recorded in just one afternoon, “State/Meant” builds an intimate space in a way where you can picture yourself as an insider at the Fall Creek studio. Woven with intricate chords and ethereal vocals a banjo plays distinctly, complementing each element of the song. The sound is perfectly down tempo with the beauty and subtleness of a ripple in a pond and comes at the right time of year to transition listeners into the crisp fall season.
