How many bands can Portland inspire, support, and send out into the world? While the answer may still be lower than that of Brooklyn, the success rate of Portlandian musical groups is incredibly high. Seeking to get in on the action is AU, a multi-dimensional, experimental band based in Oregon by way of Massachusetts; at least that’s the path frontman Luke Wyland has followed.

Dana Valatka makes up the other half of the duo that is reportedly pronounced just as it appears; ay-you. Upon hearing their third and most recent album Both Lights, most are shocked to discover the small size of the group. It seems that while in studio there is an open-door policy to help create their big and fast sound, Wyland and Valatka are currently the only two permanent members and should be held responsible for most of the racket. These talented musicians show off their rock-orchestra capability nicely on the second single from Both Lights titled “Get Alive.”

While the banjo and harpsichord combination may stand out and create the unique sound of the track, the mood is set before they first appear. The opening horns and mixed percussion announce the song’s fun-loving mood and allow the strings to hold the spotlight before the drums kick in. Without the catchy, attention-grabbing introduction, the orchestral feel could give way to more of a country-folk atmosphere. The song’s close is a wonderful male-female harmony of the title, and its simple message justifies the upbeat and happy track. As it stands, “Get Alive” jumps out at you and demands consideration for AU in a saturated Portland market.
