It may be the start of a new season, but last Sunday night Madison got a last dose of sunshine when Eternal Summers came to town, bringing their new album Correct Behavior with them. I guess you could classify Eternal Summers as dream pop/post punk/alternative rock etc., but I don’t think they’d give a shit either way. The trio — comprised of Nicole Yun, Daniel Cundiff, and Jonathan Woods (who joined after Yun sought out a bass player after a stolen-guitar incident) — have created music that they enjoy playing; it’s this type of attitude that’s influenced their energy and created their edge, separating them from other bands venturing into these “smorgasbord” genres.

The track “Millions” got me tapping my foot from the first clash of drums, but the dreamy, electro-guitar riff is what you’ll be bopping to for weeks. Lead singer Yun belts the continuous lyrics, “stop me from sinking back in the grave, I’ve got to shake this shell and break it into millions,” generating a curious relationship between lyrics and melody, but in Eternal Summers, it works. I’d like to go on and say that “Millions” epitomizes the essence of the band, but these guys are so unique that they cannot be limited to just one song. Each track on the newly released Correct Behavior makes a statement, and in this dream that their music creates, they’ve left it up to us to figure out what they’re trying to say.
