It’s not a remix. “Cool” is a distinctly unique track. That much is clear. Any familiarity lies in the lyrics: sampled verses from two classic R&B songs. Sampling isn’t even the best term, as Le Youth has replaced the original voice of one artist with one he has deemed smooth enough for his style.

That style is L.A. through and through. Home base for the producer also known as Wes James, every element of a Le Youth track represents all things Los Angeles. “Cool” is no exception, and in fact it may be the rule. One listen brings you poolside to a wildly chill house party full of California girls. Tough to imagine in the dead of winter when ice fishing is a more likely option than a pool party? That’s where those recognizable lyrics come in.

Brought in from the 2006 pop song “Me & U” by Cassie and the 1998 throwback “Make It Hot” made popular by Nicole Wray, the lyrics in “Cool” give off the feel of hanging with old friends. Unlike the nostalgia brought on by an old song, this song brings the excitement of today with the crisp feel of now. Coupled with the voices of old friends like Missy Elliott — featured on “Make It Hot” – sunny skies and palm trees suddenly aren’t as unattainable. If you already know the lyrics, surely you must be invited to the bash. While paying his respects to a deep interest in R&B, Le Youth has perfected this trick and welcomes all to his silky, dance-heavy concept of nightlife.
