Canadian indie rocker Mac DeMarco had a big 2012 and he’s on way to an even bigger 2013. After a string of EP cassette releases, DeMarco got signed to Captured Tracks and put out two full-lengths last year. The latter, II, garnered a significant buzz and scored DeMarco a coveted “Best New Music” on Pitchfork. With a carefree, vehemently-DIY attitude that brings none of indie rock’s usual pretense, DeMarco has proved himself not only as a likeable dude but as an undeniable talent.

High Noon Saloon
8:30 PM; $10/$12

While DeMarco’s songwriting skills are apparent — Mac records everything himself, with more precision than one might assume — he doesn’t take himself too seriously. In DeMarco’s live show, which he dubs a “raunchfest,” he and his band are known for telling sex jokes and even engaging in some nudity from time to time, if DeMarco is feeling “funky enough.” DeMarco’s laid-back stoner vibe (see Real Estate or Ariel Pink) turns into a different beast live, complete with noisy solos and spontaneous musical tangents; there have been shows where he covered both Dave Brubeck and Limp Bizkit on the same night. Not a joke.

Mac DeMarco will tear down the High Noon Saloon this Wednesday night with Naomi Punk and Calvin Love. Check back here for an interview with DeMarco as a part of our review of the show.
