A heavy subject like separation anxiety probably isn’t something you’d expect a big ‘n’ fun rock ‘n’ roll band named Diarrhea Planet to write a song about. And I don’t blame you. Only two short months ago, I myself wasn’t convinced; I merely assumed they were some kind of blend between Andrew W.K. and Fang Island, except all of their songs were about crap, the act of crapping, living amongst crap, etc. But even bands with four guitarists like to smear on the heavy stuff sometimes, and with “Separations” that’s exactly what Diarrhea Planet does.

Albeit, they do trade in the more troubling aspects of parting ways for a four-guitar’d tour-de-force that brims with chant along vocals and a positivity that can only be unleashed with never ending fist pumps. Hell, throughout “Separations” frontman Jordan Smith never stops looking forward, spewing out a bowl-full of ways to get past the shitty stuff and get on with your day. If anything, “Separations” best serves as a checklist for any loner in need of a pick-me-up. A righteous, balls-to-the-wall pick-me-up.
