Created in Wisconsin and transplanted to Brooklyn, the band Yellow Ostrich brings a dark persistence to their newest album, Cosmos, scheduled for release on February 25th on Barsuk Records. During the recording of the record, the band members went to extremes, such as living in windowless rooms while studying astronomy for nine months and sailing from Mexico to Hawaii.

The band’s eccentric methods present themselves quite clearly in their first single from the new album, entitled “Shades.” With nothing but a driving drum beat and a repetitive guitar riff, the sparse instrumentation openly bares the inherent dark tone. This underscores the likewise morose lyrics, like, “I wanna sleep but I drink too much / I wanna think but I run too much.” The result is a clean alt-rock jam that just might make you feel like running, too.
