If you browse the Soundcloud page for Hannah Luree, the lead singer for this Madison-based indie electronica act, you’ll immediately notice that her voice is timeless, able to carry anything from a folksy singer-songwriter tune to a hip-hop hook. You’ll also notice that it seems best focused in Oh My Love’s synth-driven sound, and especially in this single where a stuttering beat echoes through atmospherics. And it’s not just Luree’s vocals that make “Turnpike” special; it’s also the band’s ability to weave a complex tune using a simple toolset, and their superb sonic editing. Rarely do you hear a song where each note sounds so considered.

About The Author

Gretchen grew up on Tom Petty and T. Rex and played them both copiously during her record-spinning days as a college radio DJ (and yes, those records really spun — it was “The Vinyl Show,” after all). Nowadays she cultivates a strong pop sensibility and delights at the resurgence of disco and that deep, ‘90s-flavored house aesthetic.
