Destroyer released its last full-length album in 2011, so it is safe to say that fans of Dan Bejar — the man behind the project — are eager and excited for his upcoming release. Poison Season is out on August 28 and features the single “Dream Lover,” which brings a fresh sound to his repertoire of music. He uses the saxophone here with much more punch than the last album, energizing “Dream Lover” while simultaneously enhancing Bejar’s smooth croon. He combines a ’70s rock sound while holding onto his orchestral desires. Bejar executes this well, as the horns add just the right amount of surprise to keep listeners from dismissing it as a sound they’ve heard too many times. His humor, as evidenced by the line “Oh shit, here comes the sun,” prevents the song from becoming too cheesy. “Dream Lover” holds promise for the future, ensuring that fans have a lot to look forward to in August.
