When the clubs close, the surgeons rise for work and unknowns search for fame, there is a rare breed that bops amidst the infamous plastic potency of the Los Angeles area. Where the sun often shines on the soul-less, Cali quintet Delta Spirit proves it’s possible to make it with nothing but a smile on your face. Blending inspiration from its sunny surroundings and eclectic elements of Americana, the band bubbles with hand-drawn folk and soul on its full-length debut, Ode to Sunshine. Tossing around timpani, tambourine and tinkery piano washed in lo-fi tones is no small feat, but Delta Spirit does it with unbelievable ease. Brimming with passion and prowess, Delta Spirit dons the same raggedy rough-edged vocals as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s Alec Ounsworth with an organic bombast like indie-rock rhythm devils Man Man. Throw in a sprinkle of revival-time piano and the shuffle of dusty Vaudeville revue and no doubt, the Spirit will move you.
