NYC trio MisterWives have hardly a year behind them but play like seasoned vets. I assume they are capable of producing a song I’m not fond of, but they’ve yet to do so. These guys have a sophisticated sound and a diverse slathering of tracks to boot.

Coming somewhere from a folky-pop camp, MisterWives tracks overflow meaning and depth. Lead singer Mandy Lee spearheads these qualities, with soulful vocals which tiptoe the line between vulnerable and forceful. Proceeding at a steady march, “Coffins” more than any other tracks highlights MisterWives gentle vulnerability, while tracks like “Kings & Queens” brings out Lee’s vocal bite, accompanied by a jolting electronic rhythm. If that didn’t get your attention, try “Vagabond”. It’s got matching power, but more folk and less electricity.

If I were a betting man, I would put money on this band blowing up. Check them out, and don’t stop at “Coffins” — they’ve got so much more to offer.
