Count me among the many fans thrilled that Broken Bells’ debut release was not an isolated incident. The self-titled 2010 album remains one of my favorite examples of a successful side project. Already two of the best at their respective talents, the merger of The Shins’ James Mercer and Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse, retained the trademark elements of each accomplished artist. Meyrin Fields, a four-track EP, teased that continued collaboration was possible despite busy schedules for the touring front man and mega-producer. Recently revealed single “Holding on for Life” verifies the reunion and offers a first listen from the second full-length record.

The eerie opening to the track quickly gives way to the familiar guitar strum that meshed so flawlessly over Burton’s beats in the past. As the vocals steadily rise to the highest of heights, the wait for more Broken Bells officially ends. Perfectly in line with the probable throwback theme of After the Disco, “Holding on for Life” is catchy, dance-worthy and brings out the best falsetto Mercer has to offer. Remarkably reminiscent of Barry Gibb, the chorus repetitiously soars over the reliable bass-line. Throw in the late-track, guitar breakdown and all of the Broken Bells staples are there. Best part of this single? A full album is soon to follow.

After the Disco is expected in January, and I can only hope it contains anything slightly resembling prior standouts “The Ghost Inside” and “The High Road.”
