The dream-pop disco trio known as Yumi Zouma blends nostalgic ’80s pop elements into a modern day indie-rock hit. Off of their self-titled EP out this month, the trio exposes their velvety smooth style, R&B influences, and soft disco themes in the hit “The Brae.”

It occurred to me to look up the definition of “brae” to see what the song was really getting at, and the definition stated “a steep bank or hillside.” So I took another listen to the lyrics to piece it all together but had trouble understanding how a “hillside” fit into this sad love song, seeing as “brae” is never even mentioned in the lyrics. Maybe my confusion stems from some miscommunication between band members seeing as some of them live in New York and others in Paris, or maybe I should just attribute my confusion to brilliant creativity of the band. When it comes down to it, the song speaks for itself and with or without the word “brae” intertwined in its lyrics the song is still an impressive collaboration.
