James Vincent McMorrow doesn’t believe in repeating himself, and his second album adds credence to his commitment to avoiding repetition. Post Tropical has drifted from its acoustic predecessor, but the emphasis on the singer’s humbling vocals remains in full. Wandering with no sense of urgency, “Red Dust” smoothly transitions from one part to the next, creating a stream-of-consciousness structure guided by McMorrow’s thoughtful reflections. The track perplexingly marries simple electronic beats with gentle, nurturing keys and glowing vocals which convey a Bon Iver-like emotionalism. “Red Dust” doesn’t seem like it should sound as cohesive as it truly does.
