Having spent the entirety of her career looking back at her past, it appears that Sharon Van Etten is ready to turn her gaze upon the present. Her current single “Taking Chances” takes its title to heart, showing the singer/songwriter set her acoustic ambience aside in favor of an R&B-infused sound.

Even though its readily apparent that “Taking Chances” poses a stark contrast to any song that Sharon’s ever recorded, the track still retains her unmistakable mark thanks in part to her haunting, emotive lyricism and in part to her producing the modern-minded track on her own.

If anything, “Taking Chances” is a natural progression for a deserving artist who’s finally ready to explore new ventures. And while taking the reins into your own hands can bring about feelings of uncertainty, on “Taking Chances” Van Etten sounds as confident — and ready — as ever.
