Music has the ability to consume the entire image and persona of an artist. Melody, pace, production, lyrics, and even song titles may speak to the characteristics of their owner. As if emptying the contents of another’s backpack or purse onto the counter for all to see, an EP is a quick glimpse into the musical moment of that someone. With a full-length release, the picture clarifies. The tracks serve as different stops on a privately guided tour of the artist’s home, where each new room reveals more of the puzzle. A debut album is often a step further, bordering on identity theft.

Abram Shook has released such a solo debut, and sure enough it comes complete with his very own vibe. You can tell he has traveled the world. You can tell he has stewed on the sound that is and will be Abram Shook. Using a handful of Austin-based bands as stepping stones, that sound arrives via Sun Marquee. First stop on the album — the grand foyer opening into the mind of this indie-rocker — is titled “Coastal.” Again, in name alone we are given hints regarding his uprooted ways and the easy-going nature the Americana tune will inspire. Haunting vocals and a floating guitar grace the tour that is bound to end out back, pool-side on a deck chair. The nice build-up within “Coastal” leaves me in no hurry to get there. The foyer suits me just fine.
